The Must-Have Master Bathroom Renovation Checklist
Remodeling a bathroom can be an exciting time – but it also requires a lot of work and preparation. In order to achieve the perfect master bathroom, or build an extra half bath on the first floor of your home, it’s important to prep accordingly so you can create the bathroom of your dreams. If you’re ready to get started remodeling a bathroom in your home, follow our master bathroom checklist, so you can enjoy all the features your master bath has to offer.
Must-Have Master List for Bathroom Remodeling
In order to begin remodeling your bathroom, you have to plan and prep your space accordingly. That means factoring in different costs, materials, and necessities you need to complete your bathroom, verse jumping straight into materials and design. Before you start picking out wallpaper or paint, consider the following:
What is the function of this bathroom?
-
- If you’re renovating a master bathroom, think about its functionality, not just its design. Is installing a tub practical, or would a floor to ceiling shower be a better use of your investment? The same rules apply to building a guest bath or a half bath. Consider the purpose of the space, and make your material purchases, and design decisions accordingly.
How much space do I have to make improvements?
-
- Don’t go for a double vanity if you have limited wall space, or add shelving that will make your bathroom feel small and cramped. Work within your square footage, or consider creating additional space if you want to maximize your bathroom.
Is everything up to date with my plumbing and electric?
-
- Your plumbing and electric plays an important part in a bathroom remodel, so talk to your contractor about whether or not you’ll need to replace or move existing pipes and wiring.
How much should I invest in this remodel?
-
- Consider the cost benefits of the remodel before you get started. If this half bath is going to be one of the most used rooms in the house, then don’t skip out on quality finishes. However, if you see yourself moving in the next year, don’t invest in something you won’t benefit from in the long term. Improve what’s there, but don’t make impractical investments.
Have I hired a contractor?
-
- A bathroom renovation is not for the faint of heart – trust us. An expert will advise you accordingly and can help you with any tough design decisions, material costs, and can assess how long the remodel should take.
Once you’ve asked yourself the preliminary questions, and feel confident in your decisions, you can start thinking about your renovation checklist!
Think of Your Materials
Once you’re ready to start redesigning your bathroom, consider all the necessary upgrades or renovations that need to occur and factor them into your budget. A few must have’s for minor and major bathroom renovations include:
-
- Cabinets and Drawers
- Faucets
- Countertops
- Flooring
- Bathroom Fixtures
- Replacing Shower Doors
- Tubs Installation
- Lighting
- Ventilation
Depending on the extent of the remodel, and how much you want to invest within this space, budget in a few extra items, like custom cabinets, floor to ceiling tiling in your shower, and other exciting add ons. However, if you have dated countertops and flooring, that should be your priority above the other finishes. If you have room to splurge on a few extra design features, you can address those further down the line.
When you remodel your bathroom the most important things to remember are:
-
- The overall function of your space
- Working in a realistic timeline with your contractor
- Remembering to enjoy the process
Your bathroom remodel will take time, but the long term payoffs of this investment far outweigh the waiting. It’s a good idea to regularly check in with your contractor, to make sure everything stays on track, and you are up to date on the status of your project. Building a bathroom oasis isn’t always easy, but the final product is always worth it.

November 24, 2020, 3:52 pm REPLYThat makes sense that updating things like the shower doors and countertops would be good renovations. My current bathroom looks pretty old, so I could see how replacing those items could go a long way to make it look more modern. I’ll have to consider doing that sort of thing before I sell my house to try and raise the value.
